In this article, we are going to talk about online education and online training, the situation is a bit special because we are in peace, we are in confinement and all the training are going to be done remotely and so it represents a hell of a change, in fact there are two possible situations, the first is that you are already used with your students to use educational platforms so in this crisis, distance education is much more obvious, where you go directly to everything at a distance and as you are used to, it’s a simple adaptation, there is no longer any face-to-face and therefore the change in this period of confinement is less brutal but the danger is not less,it’s that quite simply incessantly resting only on the educational platform and losing its students without knowing it, the second case is that you pass from a do face-to-face situation in a class and then suddenly with confinement and well you do or have to do your lessons overnight from any past online so it is sure that the change is brutal and unprepared, in whatever either the situation whether they are prepared or not the training and distance education to meet an objective the efficiency of the transmission of knowledge, then to achieve this objective of efficiency errors are to be avoided and some principles must be respected.
What are they? What are the mistakes to avoid?
Thinking that online training is a must
The mistake number one is to think that distance training is a must in those of the degraded world compared to in the face-to-face training, there are several universities including the most prestigious such as Stanford, Harvard, which provides university courses exclusively online with a diploma at the end, and in the united states in higher education in 2018 this concerns nearly 16% of students or 3.2 million people exclusively take online courses and almost 18% had discover online with face-to-face so in fact there is a work-study program and on-the-job training. Harvard university 1/3 of students takes online courses, so at the end of its online courses diplomas are issued, and the University of Stanford has exclusively trained at a distance more than 20 million people around the world, online courses allow you to cross borders and do benefit a maximum of people all over the planet, in France we have the University of Bourgogne, Bordeaux or even Rennes, who are these pioneers in distance education, so in France you can prepare a diploma exclusively online.
Online education is not something new,and the difficulty is more for schools and establishments who are not at all prepared, accustomed to distance education and training, particularly because of the virus Covid 19, we have gone from a face-to-face education to 100% distance learning situation overnight without being prepared.
Thinking that online training is much better
The mistake number two is to think that the face-to-face training is much better than the online training, the face-to-face teaching still has some disadvantages in particular you already have fatigue and the pace, students all day sitting on chairs, and when we know that attention drop after about 20 minutes so attention and concentration, it’s not because you keep students six hours a day in this class which links to 6 hours of actual work, and in face-to-face training a low attention, therefore when the course is over well it is not possible to review it and therefore when we refer to the forgetting curve statistic, students forgets practically 80% of what was seen of the content after 24 hours, so there is also that to be taken.
Participants recently said that they greatly preferred the solution of distance training than face-to-face training, it is true that the face-to-face training has many advantages, like seeing other participants, the fact of having an atmosphere but in terms of pedagogical effectiveness, they find that the training aligned as it is presented, they prefer this solution than the two-day face-to-face which has its advantages of course but which do not offer the same capacity for information retention.
Thinking that online training is more effective
The mistake number three is to think that online training is a panacea and would solve all problems, online training has its advantages, first there is respect for the pace of the student, students follow the course at their own pace, so there is no fatigue problem that can be found in a face-to-face course and of course there is the possibility of reviewing the courses, to review the content at any time so we can review the content once, twice, three times and well of course better information retention, but the online training can be successful under one fundamental condition which that the students must be particularly motivated and it is also according to their profiles, it is sure that an online training with students can motivate who are not used to it, is relatively difficult…
University of Indiana carried out a study with its own students, although the results of this study show that online courses have many advantages, these types of courses may not suit the learning profiles of the students, the amount of work and time required to pass an online course may not be understood by students, in this period of confinement, colleges, technical high schools, vocational high schools are not used to give online courses, so it is relatively new, students need a framework.
Pupils did not choose the online training, so obviously the motivation is not at the same level as of the pupils who would have chosen to follow an online training, and in the primary the concept of coaches and support is more important, but here there are parents who can take the place of schoolteachers even if there is also the limit, because parents are not enough guardians and have not been trained to be a primary schoolteacher.
Thinking that online training has the same expectations
The mistake number four is to think that online training is a substitute for face-to-face training, namely to have the same expectations and the same objectives and to have the same behaviors as in face-to-face training, and that is the main cause of online training failure, so online training expectations, goals, and purpose is completely different from face-to-face training, online training is a new paradigm, it’s a new conditions of learning, you will seek especially to work the capacity of autonomy of the pupil, the pupil is forced to be actor of his learning, is not easy especially in this period confinement with level school classes who are not used to work independently and who are not used to online training, therefore in online education and training, the presence of the teacher will be different so the key to the success of an online training is that the teacher or trainer is more in a support process and therefore he will be more of an accompanist than wanting to replace a physical presence. The teacher, the trainer could have these sprints from the coach of a guide, knowing how to accompany and being a strong coach makes a big difference, whose commitment the attention and learning of students.
Thinking that online training is an operational framework
In online training, there are general framework :
- Students look at the content or watch the lesson.
- You offer exercises with group work and at the end you have a report
- You have a question-and-answer session to maintain the link and correct the exercises and of course answer the questions
In online education we find the principle of the class is reversed, Benjamin Franklin said one day: tells me and I forget, teach me and I remember maybe, involve me and I learn.
Learning really does in the involvement of students, the application that we find of course either face-to-face learning but that we also find in online education, moreover online training or teaching works especially as you urge students to apply.
